Amble around Central Park

As someone who embraces the chill with an icy grace, winter in New York becomes a season to cherish, not to dread. Among my preferred activities in the city that never sleeps, one standout is venturing into Central Park on crisp December evenings. This tranquil escape allows me to sidestep the bustling Fifth Avenue crowds while still immersing myself in the festive ambiance. While I may not be lacing up ice skates at the Wollman rink or taking a carriage ride, I find delight in observing these activities – a spectator to the joyous spectacle around me. With hands tucked in my pockets and Christmas tunes playing in my headphones, a leisurely stroll around the park becomes the perfect way to revel in the season.

Buy a ticket to the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall

Experiencing the Radio City Rockettes during the holiday season is a nostalgic and quintessentially New York tradition for me. The first time I attended the Christmas Spectacular as a child was truly magical—the enchanting dance routines, the dazzling lights, and the infectious energy in the room felt like stepping into a scene from a holiday movie. Now, as an adult, it remains a cherished holiday event that I eagerly anticipate. The precision and spirit with which the Rockettes perform are awe-inspiring, making each show a remarkable spectacle. Sharing this experience, especially with someone who has never witnessed it or hasn’t been to the iconic venue before, adds an extra layer of excitement and joy.

Stroll by the lights in Dyker Heights

For the past four years, I’ve embarked on the lengthy subway journey to Dyker Heights in Brooklyn to marvel at the festive spectacle created by the dedicated residents of this neighbourhood. It’s as if Christmas has exploded across every front yard, and it’s a sight to behold. From towering inflatable lawn animals to animated Santa, a multitude of nutcrackers, and an abundance of Christmas lights that transform day into night, the decorations are nothing short of spectacular. Insider tip: For the most captivating light displays, explore the blocks between 11th to 13th Avenues from 83rd to 86th Streets. And for a delightful break in the neighbourhood, treat yourself to a hot chocolate and a pastry at Panino Rustico.

Ice skate in Bryant Park

My preferred holiday pastime involves rising with the early morning sun on a weekday and making my way from my Brooklyn residence to Bryant Park. The goal? To be present when the winter ice rink opens its gates at 8 a.m. In the heart of Midtown, surrounded by bustling office workers, you’ll spot impeccably dressed corporate individuals donning hockey gear and ice skates, headphones in, gracefully gliding on the ice before heading to work. Nestled in the shadow of the New York Public Library, it transforms into an urban winter wonderland. During weekday mornings, the rink—complimentary if you bring your own skates or $21-$36 for rentals—offers a serene atmosphere, free from the usual weekend crowds (or kids).

Bask in the glow of the Met Christmas tree

Escape the winter chill by stepping into the warmth of the Met’s Great Hall. Make your way beyond the stairs to Gallery 305, where an annual tradition unfolds—a majestic 20-foot blue spruce takes center stage in the Medieval Sculpture Hall. This isn’t your average tree display; at its base, an exquisite eighteenth-century Neapolitan Nativity scene unfolds, complemented by an equally remarkable eighteenth-century Spanish choir screen from the Cathedral of Valladolid. For your visit in 2024, consider planning ahead with a timed ticket or reservation if you wish to ensure a seamless experience.

Walk through a deserted West Village

Amidst the frenzy of visitors leading up to the holidays, there’s a magical hush that descends upon the city on Christmas or New Year’s Day. It’s a dreamlike tranquillity that envelops usually vibrant neighbourhoods, such as the West Village. Strolling leisurely, I find joy in peering into the windows of closed stores, admiring the charming brownstones, and meandering down streets that rarely see such emptiness. In true New York City fashion, a hidden gem of a bar is likely to be open, offering a welcome respite to thaw frozen hands and feet. Days like these serve as poignant reminders of why my love for this city runs so deep.
